Creative Initiatives Fund

Do you have a creative and novel idea to expand family and systemic psychotherapy and practice in the UK? Our funding could help you turn it into a project to improve people’s lives.

Why was the Creative Initiatives Fund set up?

The Creative Initiatives Fund was formerly called the David Campbell Fund in honour of the life and work of David Campbell (1943-2009).

David was a founder member of the Association for Family and Systemic Psychotherapy (AFSP). He was a consultant clinical psychologist and systemic family psychotherapist at the Tavistock Clinic in London, where he worked for 37 years.

David made a major contribution to building resources, including books and articles, for the field of family psychotherapy throughout his long, rich and immensely productive career.

He was renowned for his imaginative approaches and for encouraging trainees and colleagues to widen their horizons and tackle new opportunities.

Who can apply?

All AFSP members can apply. We’re looking to fund any inventive, imaginative or resourceful ideas that strengthen and expand family psychotherapy and systemic practice in the UK, and improve people’s lives.

We want to support a variety of projects that will support the wellbeing of couples and families, promote systemic ideas, and extend our knowledge and understanding.

Projects should benefit AFSP members. We want to encourage a wide range of members to apply so we’ll consider equality and diversity when we allocate funding.

You can apply for funding as an individual or group.

What can’t the funding be used for?

Please note that the fund can’t be used:

  • To provide bursaries for training or post-qualifying courses
  • For travel expenses to attend UK or international conferences, or to provide money for standard equipment
  • To fund activities undertaken as part of training

How much can I apply for?

We usually give sums between £500 and £1,000. For particularly worthwhile proposals, we can award up to £1,500.

You can apply to either part or fully fund your initiative.

How do I apply for funding?

Please fill in and submit the form at the bottom of this page.

Who reviews the applications?

A committee of AFSP members consider all applications. This is led by current chair Peter Stratton.

When you apply, one member of the committee will be your point of direct contact. They’ll keep you informed during the process.

When will I find out if I’ve won funding?

You’ll usually find out if you’ve been successful within 6 weeks.

Please don’t submit proposals that depend on financial support less than 6 weeks from the date of application.

What kinds of projects have received funding through the Creative Initiatives Fund?

  • A programme providing training and resources for teachers to introduce children to systemic ideas in the classroom
  • A 2-year programme of group training sessions for families with a relative experiencing psychosis for the first time
  • Support to develop a course at the Institute of Family Therapy for children and families going through separation and divorce
  • Support for a researcher undertaking a systematic review of the evidence base for systemic family psychotherapy

How can I support the Creative Initiatives Fund?

You can support the fund by donating to AFSP. Donations allow us to increase the range and number of projects we support. Please email hello@theafsp.org if you’re interested in donating.

If you’d like to support the fund’s work by joining the committee, you can also email us using the same address.
